2010 local dining challenge

down to earth GIS Business Solutions CEO, Mindy Seiffert, established a New Year's resolution to spend 90%+ of her dining out dollars at local restaurants, coffee houses, and eateries. The goal of this resolution is to support local business as much as possible. Additional benefits include gaining a better understanding of how much money she is spending on eating out and building a database of locally-owned restaurants that can be mapped and shared with others. Follow her challenges, triumphs, and key learning by reading the down to earth GIS blog or getting daily/weekly updates via Facebook and Twitter.

Cedar Rapids, IA: As Cedar Rapids is Mindy's hometown, and the town is still recovering from the horrible flood of 2008, she will track and promote all local eateries in the area throughout the year. The map may get crowded! So far so good! A few coffee shops, a Mexican joint, and more.

Hawaii, The Big Island: January 27-February 3, 2010, we traveled to Hawaii for a week of vacation and fun in the sun. It was pretty easy to find local eateries on the island but I did discover that Google Maps is not the way to try and navigate the island. There may be some future mapping opportunities calling our name from the Big Island. If you are interested in seeing our trip around the island, please visit our down to earth blog too.

Chicago, IL: January 10-14, 2010, I traveled to Chicago for a week. This was the first week of local dining challenge. It truly proved to be a challenge, until Mindy learned that this was going to take some research and planning in order to make it happen. The first morning, she made a mistake by going to Elephant & Castle for breakfast. However, she quickly adapted and was able to successfully complete the week by dining at several famous, locally-owned restaurants. Mindy recommends all of these restaurants to anyone who is looking for a local flavor in the Central Loop area of downtown Chicago.
